It's now very clear to some of us that SolidWorks, Inventor, Pro/E, IronCAD, CoCreate, VX, KeyCreator, etc. are in big trouble because of Siemens Synchronous Technology.
It should come as no surprise that manufacturing idiot and SolidWorks blogger, Matt Lombard labeled Synchronous Technology "Ho-Hum" on his blog. Today in yet another desperate attempt to discredit Synchronous Technology Lombard is calling Solid Edge and UG NX "FrankenCAD".
It should now be clearer than ever how full of shit Matt Lombard really is to those who are objective. Unfortunately most CAD and CAM users aren't objective. None of this "Ho-Hum" and "FrankenCAD" crap about Synchronous Technology came as any surprise to those who had read what Matt Lombard posted to Usenet in regards to manufacturing solutions for years. If you did read his posts to Usenet it quickly became clear that Matt Lombard was totally out of touch with the tools needed in a CADCAM system.
It's almost a given that Synchronous Technology is going to have a huge impact and it seems to me someone should be asking Mike Payne of SpaceClaim if their team can implement the same thing in the other programs I mentioned.
If the companies named do nothing to respond to what Siemens/UGS has they are going to get blown out of the water should Siemens do the proper marketing of this technology.
The good news is that from all signs so far it does appear that Siemens is prepared to do what it takes to gobble up SolidWorks and others market share. Getting users to accept that they need to make a major change in the way they do things isn't going to be an easy task or pretty. It takes "gorilla marketing" tactics.
Some of us have waited a very long time for Synchronous Technology and we can’t wait to get our hands on using it. In four weeks or so everyone will have the chance to try it out and compare notes.

I have been using SpaceClaim long enough now to see the advantage in feature based modeling. We have some seats of SolidWorks here, and those users have been amazed at how easy it is to create and edit models in SpaceClaim. I would expect that UG NX6 users will see the same benefits. I think I can hear the bell toll for parametric modelers.
One of the ways that Siemens Synchronous Technology is different than SpaceClaim is what Siemens calls Live Rules with maintain the dimensions or constraints you establish so you don't have to redefine them over and over like you do in SpaceClaim.

I don't think that history based/parametric modeling is going to be overrun anytime soon because it still has many advantages over direct geometry editing. With UG NX 6 or Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology you get the best of both worlds in one system. Right now this appears to be the best compromise and may prove to be the best compromise for a very long time.
I’m very troubled with the marketing that SpaceClaim has done in the past and is currently doing. They appear to not be very active with aggressively marketing SpaceClaim. They have a website that no longer seems to get updated very often, a blog that has been dead for months, they only have one new video and their forum has very few active participants. It's really sad, as I'd love to see SpaceClaim do well. The problem is that SpaceClaim started wrong with a licensing scam that I said wouldn’t work and didn’t work and they now seem to be in survival mode. SpaceClaim is now using a very weak reseller in Franco Folini /Novedge to market SpaceClaim rather than what I believe they should be doing… using gorilla marketing to directly sell to end-users. No CADCAM company in their right mind would expect Franco Folini/Novedge to produce serious sales and no CADCAM company needs what Franco Folini/Novedge provides… absolutely nothing! The commissions that Novedge/Folini make are better spent by a CADCAM company selling direct!
With all the marketing mistakes SpaceClaim has made, and continues to make, it might be better if SpaceClaim could convince someone like SolidWorks or Autodesk to buy them. SolidWorks and Inventor are going to need to offer what Siemens has with Synchronous Technology for Solid Edge and for UG NX 6.
I’d really like to see SpaceClaim stay independent but I don’t think SpaceClaim is willing to do what it takes marketing wise to survive and prosper
